Uses of Sonic Notify have so far included transmitting MP3s to attendees of a concert, and the application is expected to have far-reaching implications for marketing and advertising.

Densebrain is marketing Sonic toward vendors rather than consumers, because consumers won’t need to download anything to reap its benefits. To deploy Sonic, vendors simply need to transmit beacons of high-frequency sound (inaudible to humans) on their premises. Customers’ smartphones can pick up these beacons to receive information. A customer browsing the shelves of a store might receive beacons encoded with information pertinent to the products that attract his/her interest.

The NextTrain mobile phone app is another recent Densebrain offering based on a similar premise to Sonic Notify: users can receive information without installing anything. It uses cell phone towers to track information on New York subway train departure and arrival times, collecting real-time data with the goal of accurately forecasting subway schedules. NextTrain relies on crowd-sourcing to accomplish this goal; the larger its user base, the more accurate its predictions will become.
